To the JLF and Back

I'm back from the Jaipur Literature Festival, albeit with a throat infection that's left me grumpier (and quieter) than usual. But I cheered up when I learnt that the videos of my sessions at the Festival were online, and thought I'd post them for you to enjoy.

Mumbai Narrative: In which Madhu Trehan interviewed Mumbai Fables' author Gyan Prakash and me.
Storyteller-in-Chief: In which I interviewed author Junot Diaz on the subject of his roots, race, and the impact of both on his writing.
The New Non Fiction: A panel I moderated featuring David Finkel, Martin Amis, Ahdaf Soueif, Basharat Peer and Mirza Waheed.

Hi Sonia,
I enjoyed your session on The New Non-Fiction at JLF. Your point on non-fiction being more and more about personal stories of individuals, which makes it easier for a reader to relate to, is so true.
As a reader, it is easier to empathise more with fiction than non-fiction. Midnight's Children, Train to Pakistan and parts of A Suitable Boy convey the trauma of the partition more than the non-fiction books on the subject.

The discussion was all the more interesting as most of you on the panel were novelists as well as non-fiction writers. A thought-provoking and wonderful session.

Best Wishes, Indu

Hi Indu,

Thanks for writing it. I enjoyed that session as well, particularly, as you point out, because several of the writers wrote across genres and had great analysis to offer.
