New Template

Yes, I'm excited! I had the old one for years, in fact I think I made it when my first book was published. So this is a great new start. I'm going to be fiddling with this for a while because let's face it: it still doesn't feel like home. The background photo is of a sign outside, what else, a dog store in Martha's Vineyard. (I wanted to put a photo of Zoey but worried readers may think I have no interests outside of my dog and my books. Which of course isn't true. Ahem.)
And on the subject of new things, did you know that my book, Beautiful Thing, is now available for pre-order? At a discount of 30 per cent with free shipping, no less. If you do order it you must let me know what you thought of the service. I've never used Flipkart but always heard good things about it.

Buy the book here ...

Update: Of course the background has changed! This photograph was also taken by me in Martha's Vineyard this past summer. We caught the last of the sun, and the start of the fall: a beautiful time for many things, including photography.

The Kalmadi Toad

If you thought our politicians had run out ways to exploit our country or humiliate us or to expose our inability to compete with the best, then you haven't kept up with Suresh Kalmadi, Chairman, Organizing Committee, Commonwealth Games India. It's three years too late (most of the CWG venues were to be completed in 2007) and Kalmadi has for us a Games' village described as uninhabitable, a security situation described as unsafe, processes described as being in disarray, and a collapsed bridge. Add to that malaria, fear of terror attacks, corruption allegations and our general affinity for chaos and you have not merely a PR disaster waiting to happen but a blow to India's reputation that will take years to repair. On the plus side this should explain, once and for all, why a country of 1 billion people has no luck producing world champions.
