Lorna's Bebdo: The New Nike Cricket Commercial

The Konkani song Bebdo (Drunkard), which plays during the new Nike cricket commercial (see above) has come in for as much curiosity and praise as the commercial itself, which embodies the spirit and passion of Bombay and of cricket.
It's a wonderful song, warm, rich and powerful, and influenced by the jazz masters of the time. In an article written in September 2003, journalist Naresh Fernandes narrates the story of Lorna, and the origins of the song. Bebdo can be downloaded here. (Quick registration required).
As one of the comments points out, the download is accompanied by a bunch of spyware, but I've been listening to the song in iTunes without a problem, so switch on pop-up blocker, and you'll be fine. Rhythm House also stocks Bebdo for Rs 199.

Update: According to this news article, Nike's version is sung by the Mumbai-based singer Ella Castellino, while the lyrics were re-written by Agnello Oswin Dias, Senior Vice-President, J Walter Thompson, which conceptualised the ad. (That explains why we don't hear the word Bebdo throughout!) "The ad was shot by Abhinay Deo of Ramesh Deo Productions; Nitin Desai is the art director. The set was created by Desai in Karjat, Maharashtra. Shot on a Rs 1 crore budget, it is easily one of the most expensive Indian ad films made recently. A traffic setting was used because Nike is known for scaling up a common, every-day setting. Elements such as a man looking into a mirror and clipping his nostril hair (when the ball strikes the mirror), or even the Parsi statue working as the umpire, have all been thrown in to add to the well-planned chaos effect. Further, words such as ‘Balcony, ball dena’ are quintessentially a home-grown Mumbaikar’s line - something that Mumbaikars Aggie and Deo would know only too well." Link.

Sonia, thanks for the info. I was looking for the song. That download link has some nasty (is there any other kind) spyware that comes with the download so I'm going to stay away but the related info is great!
